If I save the attached .pps file in a separate folder on my C: drive, I can view it via Windows Explorer using the PowerPoint Viewer. Make sure file name & path are correct. If an Attachment is a .mve or a .pps file, I can simply "click" on the attachment and it opens without a problem.

I unchecked Google Desktop Search in the Add-in Manager as Bob suggested, and the problem magically disappeared.
