I have also tried clicking on "Diagnose Connection Problems" and it always gives me the same result (Windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection). You're the best!!!!!

What I did was I went into firefox and enabled it as my main browser so when things try and update or connect to the internet it uses firefox to do I can't view the link for resetting hosts file. Check "automatically detect configuration" and UNCHECK the option "use a proxy server...." Restart IE to see if it works correctly. I am working out of town and *had* to get IE to work. ie 8 intially used to open webpages but after sometime suddenly it used to blankout.I checked my internet connection---it was fine. Let the list populate. This is the fix for what I was looking for.
