Thank you so much - much time and possible expense saved! Setting the SATA config to Compatibility mode worked like a charm! Their goal is simple: their computer is crippled with malware and they just want it to work so that they can get on with their lives. If it is, disable it and give it a test run of 2-3 days under a regular rebooting cycle to see if the error persists.
